Meditations and Illuminations on the Tibetan Book of the Dead
We are excited to bring to the Gold Coast one of the classic works of Tibetan Buddhism, The Tibetan Book of the Dead, set to music by Trikaya. Trikaya features Michael Askill on singing bowls, bells and gongs, Riley Lee on shakuhachi, Tenzin Choegyal on Tibetan flute and voice, and James Coates with spoken word. The text, known in Tibetan as Bar do thos grol or Liberation through Hearing in the Between, relates the experience of death and rebirth through intermediate stages or bardos.
Bringing together four of Australia’s finest multi-cultural collaborators in a highly original interpretation of `The Tibetan Book of the Dead’. Using selected readings combined with musical meditations and sound illuminations, this theatrical and musical experience provides an insight into how we can prepare for the mind’s release from the body and the experiences of ‘the between’. The ‘Bardo Thotrol’ (The Great Liberation through Hearing in the Between) text was originally composed by Padmasambhava in the 14th century. It was buried in central Tibet and later discovered by Terton (treasure revealer) Karma-Lingpa. “Although this book is ostensibly written for the dead, it is in fact about life” Francesca Fremantle (author of Luminous Emptiness and co-translator with Chogyam Trungpa of The Tibetan Book of the Dead).

James Coates has been an actor in all the mediums specialising mainly in Shakespeare then presenting the Persian poets Rumi and Hafez with a classical Persian group he founded named Khidir . As well as narrating the Tibetan Book of the Dead with Trikaya, he has performed with contemporary music ensembles such as Clocked Out, Early Warning System and Synergy Percussion. He recently presented the Bhagavad Gita at the Woodford Festival and recently The Astavakra Gita with Sangheet Mishra and Michael Askill .
Tenzin Choegyal: Tenzin was born to a nomadic family in Tibet, escaped the Chinese occupation and was raised in a Tibetan refugee community in Dharamsala, India. There, where His Holiness the Dalai Lama actively encourages his people to preserve their culture, Tenzin first began to explore his musical talents. Tenzin feels a particular connection to the music of the wandering people of his homeland. He recalls his father’s mastery of the lingbu (bamboo flute) and his mother’s beautiful singing, and attributes much of his passion to those early influences.
Tenzin’s award winning songs have found a place in the complex tapestry of global sounds while collaboration with numerous Australian and international performers have allowed him to experiment with rhythm and structure and challenge traditional Tibetan musical norms. Tenzin’s cantering rhythms, soaring vocals and exquisite flute solos have enchanted audiences around the globe, with his most recent appearances being at WOMAD in New Zealand and alongside Philip Glass at the 2013 Tibet House Concert in New York’s Carnegie Hall. www.tenzinchoegyal.com

Michael Askill is currently lecturing in percussion at the University of Queensland, Qld Academy of Creative Industries and the Queensland Conservatorium. He was formerly Principal Percussionist with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Principal Timpanist with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and the Artistic Director of Synergy Percussion.
