The roots of Khöömii are steeped in Mongolian culture with origins in Shamanism (Mongolia’s national religion) The modulated overtones generated while singing the base melody convey an ethereal inter-connectedness with the human spirit, nature and nomadic tradition. Bukhu finds renewed energy and warmth through his performance and considers throat singing practices as medicine.
ARTIST BIO Bukhchuluun Ganburged (Bukhu) studied as a master student at the Music and Dance Conservatory of Ulaanbaatar. He combines virtuosic Morin Khurr and Throat Singing skills with a contemporary take on the tradition of the Mongolian bard — acting as an oral memory bank, performing Mongolian folk music and exploring the aural dimensions of sound generated by traditional instruments and harmonic overtone vocal techniques.
Bukhu embodies the spirit of reinterpreted narratives through verse. Transmitting the harmony of Mongolian nomadic and Shamanic culture through time and space with an enchanting mix of folk traditions, contemporary influences, and electro-acoustic sound palettes woven into the fabric of his arrangements.
Bukhu is a member of Sydney bands Equus and Horse & Wood, and a former member of the Morin Khuur Ensemble, Khangal Quartet and Domog folk bands of Mongolia. He tours extensively in Europe, Asia and Australia, and collaborates with artists over a range of genres including Classical, World, Folk, Blues, Metal, Techno, Dub and Hip-Hop.
Bukhu began practising the ancient art of Mongolian Overtone Throat Singing and Harmonic Chant at the age of 15, known traditionally as Khöömii (Khuumii or Khoomei) referring to the various forms of overtone throat singing. The sounds of Khöömii are generated by manipulating the resonance of air pushed from the lungs , travelling past the vocal fold and lips to produced a melody. The melody can be selectively amplified by changing the shape of the resonant cavity of the mouth and throat via the manipulation of the tongue and surrounding muscles. This selective tuning generates simultaneous variations of pitch from a single resonant vocal frequency.
Bukhu has been playing the Morin Khuur (Horse-Head Fiddle) for over 14 years. The instrument has a distinctive carved horse-head pegbox. The tuning pegs on either side are known as the “horse’s ears”– with two strings and a bow traditionally made of horsehair or synthetic materials, considered a central symbol of the Mongolian nation. The Morin Khuur produces sounds described as expansive and unrestrained, both soulful and haunting, like a wildhorse neighing, or a breeze across the grasslands.
It has played a central role in expanding on the roots of nomadic herding practices and narratives as well as serving the translation of Mongolian mythologies and Secret histories into song for many centuries. It was officially inscribed by UNESCO as a masterpiece of oral and intangible heritage in 2008
